Phyllis Chang is a 4th generation Korean American singer/songwriter from Los Angeles. She is best known for her warm-smooth-sultry vocal styling and her original contemporary pop/jazz songs.
Phyllis began her musical journey during her high school years as a self-taught musician writing songs on her acoustic guitar. It was her dream to sing and write songs.
It wasn't until after Phyllis completed graduate school that she decided to pursue music professionally. Throughout most of her college years she studied and pursued fine arts and art history. Later she received her Masters of Art degree from USC in Art History/Museum Studies and played music between her work and studies.
Since 1991, Phyllis has been writing children's music as well as contemporary pop/jazz songs. Her music is a blend of pop & jazz and also includes elements of latin/bossa nova grooves. Phyllis writes romantic ballads as well as mid-tempo and uptempo songs that weave together a tapestry of warm lush alto vocals along with keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, percussion, saxophone and flute.
Phyllis sings and writes songs with lyrics that are universal. Her original songs are conversational as she sings from the heart about the many faces of love. Many of her fans have described her songs and voice as "soothing, warm, sensual, and very personal." "Her songs become your story, your stories become her songs."
Performances
Phyllis has performed at various venues throughout Southern California, as well as in Oakland, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Seattle, Hawaii, New Mexico, Las Vegas and New York. She has worked live and in the studio with some of the finest musicians from Southern California, San Francisco, Seattle, Hawaii, Pittsburgh, Ohio, New York, Korea, Japan, Mexico and Germany.
Pinky Paws Productions & Song Credits
In 1994, Phyllis started "Pinky Paws Productions" as an "indie" label and music project studio. She named her studio after one of her dogs, "Pinky Paws." Since then Phyllis has produced and recorded several cds of her music. Her CDs include: "Make Someone Happy!" "Never Alone" (2007), "Promise Me One Thing" (single), (2006), "On a Carpet Ride" (2003), "Forgiveness" (1998) "Voice in the Dark" (single)(1996), "Sing Along & Dance Along" Children's CD (2005) "For the Love of My dog" (1998), "Songs From The Heart" (1994).
Be Studios
In 2006, Phyllis started a second studio, "BE Studios" to encourage and enhance "self-expression, creativity, happiness & well-being." Her mission is to help her students and clients reach their artistic and musical goals through the exploration of art and music.
