Phyllis Chang
is a 4th generation Korean American singer/songwriter born and raised in Los Angeles. She is best known for her warm, smooth sultry vocals and contemporary pop/jazz songs.
Phyllis began her musical journey in high school years as a self-taught musician writing songs on her acoustic guitar. Through playing and singing along with other classmates, she discovered the joy of telling stories not only through art but also through music.
During her undergraduate and graduate college years, Phyllis spent most of her time studying fine arts and art history but continued writing and playing music during much of her free time. She studied Fine Arts at Calif. State University Long Beach and received her BA in Art History from Calif. State University Los Angeles and a MA in Art History/Museum Studies from USC.
For many years Phyllis worked by day as an arts educator teaching art history, curating and freelancing in art. At night she worked on crafting songs and learning to sing & record. It was her dream to one day record her songs professionally and perform her songs before "live" audiences.
Today, Phyllis describes herself as a "multimedia artist" working both with visual and audio elements. Her creative process has always involved both art and music. When Phyllis worked on her art she listened to music. When she wrote songs, she saw images. In her mind, art and music co-existed and could not be seperated from each other. Both art and music were of equal importance to Phyllis. They both stimulated her senses and together were creative tools for self-expresssion and communication.
Phyllis has recorded several CDs since she started her musical production studio. She has written songs for both children and adults. Stylistically, Phyllis composes songs that combine both pop & jazz elements. Her musical influences include pop, jazz, Latin and Bossa Nova styles of music. She weaves together these elements into her romantic ballads and groove oriented mid-uptempo songs.
Phyllis sings classic jazz standards, classic pop songs as well as her original contemporary pop/jazz songs. Her vocal delivery is never overbearing or overstated and many have described her vocal styling as "soothing and sensual." Phyllis sings about
the many faces of love with a warm voice that will soothe your heart.

A Little Story... An artist friend once said, "You're such a busy person, it's hard keeping up with you...you're always on the Go Go! If I were a fly on a wall...it would be interesting to see all that you do... Thus my friend made a drawing of me and called it, "Phyllis Playing Guitar in Her Go Go Boots."
